| The K-9 program is designed to enhance the ability of our police officers to locate and apprehend criminals who run and
hide from the law. The dogs train constantly and are controlled by their handlers. They serve as important tool for our officers as they strive to reduce crime in our community.
The Unit currently has five dogs, Belgian Malinois (pronounced Mal-lin-waas), which are specially bred for police work. Binky, Nado, Faust, Laika and Chip have a combination of extremely sensitive smell, high endurance, and incredible leaping ability.
The use of these “furry officers” greatly enhances our ability to locate missing children, elderly Alzheimer’s patients, and lost or missing property. In addition, studies show that criminal suspects that are known flight risks are less likely to run in the presence of these fleet-footed animals.
