| For persons with hearing and speech impairments
Callers using TTY equipment can also dial 9-1-1 to reach police, fire and emergency medical assistance.
Every 9-1-1 telephone position in the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police 9-1-1 Center is equipped with the Text Telephone (TTY), and each call-taker is trained to communicate with persons with speech and hearing impairments.
For persons who do not speak English
Call-takers have immediate access to interpretors who can assist them in communicating with callers. The 9-1-1 call-taker will connect you with an interpretor, and they will coordinate assistance.
To access interpreter services:
- Call 9-1-1 and in ENGLISH, state "this is a [police, fire, medical] emergency. I speak [language].
- The operator will conference the call with an interpretor (this may take a moment, please be patient)
- Let the interpretor control the conversation
If you have people in your household who do not speak english, teach them this protocol and the simple sentence "This is a [police, fire, medical] emergency, I speak [language]. This will help ensure call-takers can get help to the person as quickly as possible.
