| Chatham County has an area of 358 square miles. While some of that area is coastline and marsh, most require patrol by the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department. Areas such as Garden City, Pooler, Thunderbolt, Bloomingdale and Port Wentworth have their own departments
- The Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department currently has an authorized strength of 603 sworn officers, 30 of those positions are with the Counter Narcotics Team (CNT). In total, SCMPD employs about 800 employees (sworn and civilian)
- The department has five Precincts - West Chatham, Downtown, Central, Southside and Island - each commanded by a Captain
- The department has a number of specialty units, including: K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Marine Patrol, Dive, Air Support and Mounted Patrol
- The 9-1-1 Communications Dispatch Center handles all 9-1-1 calls for service within the County and City, including fire and EMS
- The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police was established on January 1, 2005, after the Savannah Police Department and Chatham County Police Department merged
